Ingredients

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup cranberries (4 oz)
  • 1 cup red wine (I used Shiraz)
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 mulling spice bag

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, combine water and cranberries. Bring to a boil, then cover and simmer for about 25 minutes until the cranberries have softened and burst.
  2. Strain the cranberry juice through a fine mesh sieve, pressing down on the berries to extract all the juice. Discard the berries.
  3. Return the juice to the saucepan and add the red wine, sugar, and lemon juice. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer until the sugar has dissolved, stirring occasionally.
  4. Remove from heat and add a mulling spice bag. Let it steep for 3-5 minutes, tasting after 3 minutes to adjust the spice level if needed.
  5. Make any desired adjustments to the sweetness or spiciness. Serve warm or cold. The mulled wine can be stored in the fridge and reheated when ready to serve.
