Ingredients
- 1 cup whole milk
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 large egg yolk
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1/4 cup heavy cream
- Whipped cream
- Ground cinnamon
- Cinnamon stick or star anise
- 1 ounce alcohol (optional)
Instructions
- Separate the egg yolk from the white.
- In a saucepan, heat the milk, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla until simmering.
- In a bowl, whisk together the egg yolk and sugar until pale in color.
- Gradually add a small amount of the heated milk to the egg mixture, whisking constantly to temper the eggs.
- Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over medium heat until slightly thickened, but do not boil.
- Remove from heat and stir in the heavy cream.
- Chill the eggnog before serving.
- To serve, add whipped cream, ground cinnamon, and a cinnamon stick or star anise if desired. Optionally, stir in 1 ounce of alcohol.
