Ingredients

  • 1 lemon
  • About 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 5 fresh mint sprigs
  • About 1 1/2 cups crushed or shaved ice
  • 1/4 cup bourbon
  • About 2 tablespoons club soda

Instructions

  1. Use a vegetable peeler or sharp knife to pare a 2-inch strip of lemon peel (yellow part only), then cut into long, thin shreds.
  2. Cut the lemon in half and rub one cut side on the rim of a 10 to 12 oz. glass to moisten; set the lemon aside for other uses.
  3. Sprinkle 2 teaspoons of sugar on a small plate and dip the moistened glass rim in it to coat evenly, then pour the remaining sugar into the glass.
  4. Add 4 mint sprigs to the glass and gently crush them with the sugar using a wooden spoon to release the herb's flavor.
  5. Fill the glass with crushed ice, then pour in the bourbon and top it off with club soda.
  6. Let the drink stand until the glass becomes frosty, which takes about 2 minutes.
  7. Garnish the cocktail with lemon peel and the remaining mint sprig.
  8. Enjoy sipping the Southern Mint Bliss through a straw, adding more sugar to taste if desired.
