Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • Pinch of baking soda
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 cloves
  • 2 large egg yolks
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp rum or brandy

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, combine milk, sugar, baking soda, cinnamon, and cloves. Stir well.
  2. Heat the mixture over medium-high heat until it comes to a boil.
  3. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 8 to 10 minutes to infuse the milk with the spice flavors.
  4. Remove the pan from the heat and let it cool while beating the egg yolks in a separate bowl.
  5. Incorporate the beaten egg yolks into the cooled milk and return the pan to the stove.
  6. Heat the mixture over medium-high heat for 5 to 7 minutes, stirring frequently to prevent curdling.
  7. Remove from heat, strain the mixture through a sieve to remove the cloves and cinnamon stick.
  8. Stir in the rum or brandy.
  9. Refrigerate for at least two hours before serving.
