Ingredients

  • 6 oz dry or off-dry white wine (preferably Riesling or Grüner Veltliner)
  • 1 star anise
  • 2 slices fresh ginger (1/4-inch thick each)
  • 3 green cardamom pods
  • 3 whole cloves
  • 1 to 1 1/2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 oz pear brandy (Poire William)
  • 1 Asian pear slice

Instructions

  1. In a medium, heavy-bottomed saucepan, combine the white wine, star anise, ginger, cardamom, cloves, and honey. Heat over medium heat until it just begins to simmer, stirring occasionally.
  2. Turn off the heat and let the wine mull for at least 15 to 20 minutes. Taste the wine and adjust the sweetness by adding more honey if desired.
  3. Gently reheat the wine until it starts to steam, then turn off the heat and stir in the pear brandy.
  4. Divide the mulled wine among mugs or heatproof glasses, adding a few of the spices to each glass if desired. Garnish with a slice of Asian pear. Enjoy!
