Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • Pinch of baking soda
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 cloves
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp rum or brandy

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, combine milk, sugar, baking soda, cinnamon, and cloves. Stir to mix.
  2. Heat the mixture over medium-high heat until it comes to a boil.
  3. Lower the heat and let it simmer for 8 to 10 minutes to infuse the milk with the spices.
  4. Remove from heat and allow to cool while beating the egg yolks in a separate bowl.
  5. Mix the egg yolks into the cooled milk, stirring to combine, then return the mixture to the stove.
  6. Heat over medium-high heat for 5 to 7 minutes, stirring frequently to avoid curdling.
  7. Remove from heat and strain the mixture to remove the cloves and cinnamon.
  8. Add rum or brandy and mix well.
  9. Refrigerate for at least two hours before serving.
