Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 12 strips lemon zest (from 2 lemons)
  • 6 fresh mint leaves, plus extra for garnish
  • Crushed ice
  • 2 ounces bourbon
  • Water

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan, combine sugar, lemon zest, and water. Heat over high heat, stirring occasionally until the sugar dissolves.
  2. Remove from the heat and let the mixture cool for 20 minutes. Then, remove the lemon zest and allow the syrup to cool completely.
  3. In a julep cup, muddle the fresh mint leaves with 1 tablespoon of the lemon syrup until the mint begins to break down.
  4. Add the bourbon to the cup and fill it with crushed ice. Stir well until the mixture is nicely chilled.
  5. Top with more crushed ice and garnish with a sprig of fresh mint.
