Ingredients
- 1 large egg
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup milk, chilled
- 2 tablespoons heavy cream, chilled
- 1/2 tablespoon bourbon (optional) or additional 1/2 tablespoon heavy cream for nonalcoholic version
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
- Fresh or ground nutmeg for serving
Instructions
- Separate the egg and place the egg yolk in a medium-sized bowl. Whisk in 2 tablespoons of sugar until the mixture is light, fluffy, and turns a buttery yellow.
- In a medium-sized pot over medium heat, warm the milk and heavy cream until it's just about to boil. Remove from heat.
- Gradually add a tablespoon of warm milk into the egg mixture to temper it, stirring quickly after each addition. Once the eggs are at temperature, whisk the egg mixture into the pot of warm milk and combine.
- Stir in the bourbon (if using), vanilla, and salt.
- In a separate bowl, beat the remaining egg white with 1/2 tablespoon of sugar until stiff peaks form.
- Pour the eggnog into a glass, spoon the meringue on top, and sprinkle with nutmeg.
