Ingredients
- 1 large egg (separated into yolk and white)
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1/3 cup whole milk
- 2 tablespoons heavy whipping cream
- 1/8 - 1/4 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2-3 tablespoons bourbon (optional)
Instructions
- Separate the egg yolk from the white. Place the yolk in a mixing bowl and set the white aside.
- Add sugar to the yolk and whisk until the mixture is pale yellow and fluffy. Set aside.
- In a saucepan, heat the milk, whipping cream, and nutmeg until it begins to steam. Remove from heat.
- Spoon a ladle of the hot milk mixture into the egg mixture and whisk. Continue adding ladles of the hot milk to the egg mixture.
- Slowly pour the egg mixture back into the saucepan, whisking as you do so.
- Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly until it thickens. Do not let it boil.
- Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and bourbon.
- Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
- Serve with a sprinkle of freshly grated nutmeg.
