Ingredients

  • 1 large egg (separated into yolk and white)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons heavy whipping cream
  • 1/4-1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2-3 tablespoons bourbon (optional)

Instructions

  1. Separate the egg white from the yolk and place the yolk in a medium mixing bowl, setting the egg white aside.
  2. Whisk the sugar into the egg yolk until the mixture becomes pale yellow and fluffy. Set aside.
  3. In a medium saucepan, heat the milk, whipping cream, and 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground nutmeg over medium heat until it begins to steam.
  4. Remove from heat and slowly add the hot milk mixture to the egg mixture, whisking continuously.
  5. Pour the combined mixture back into the saucepan and heat over medium, stirring constantly until it thickens, making sure not to boil.
  6. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and bourbon (if using).
  7. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving with a sprinkle of freshly grated nutmeg.
