Ingredients
- 1 large egg (separated into yolk and white)
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 1/3 cup whole milk
- 2 tablespoons heavy whipping cream
- 1/4-1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2-3 tablespoons bourbon (optional)
Instructions
- Separate the egg white from the yolk and place the yolk in a medium mixing bowl, setting the egg white aside.
- Whisk the sugar into the egg yolk until the mixture becomes pale yellow and fluffy. Set aside.
- In a medium saucepan, heat the milk, whipping cream, and 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground nutmeg over medium heat until it begins to steam.
- Remove from heat and slowly add the hot milk mixture to the egg mixture, whisking continuously.
- Pour the combined mixture back into the saucepan and heat over medium, stirring constantly until it thickens, making sure not to boil.
- Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract and bourbon (if using).
- Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving with a sprinkle of freshly grated nutmeg.
