Ingredients
- 1 egg yolk
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1/3 cup whole milk
- 1/3 cup heavy cream
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
- A pinch of freshly grated nutmeg
- 1 tablespoon bourbon
- Additional freshly grated nutmeg for garnish
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the egg yolk and sugar until thick and lemon-colored.
- In a saucepan, combine the milk and 1/2 of the heavy cream. Heat the mixture over medium heat until it just coats a metal spoon, stirring constantly.
- Remove from heat, and stir in the vanilla and nutmeg. Cool the custard in a cold water bath, stirring occasionally.
- Refrigerate the custard for at least 2 hours but no longer than 24 hours.
- Just before serving, stir the bourbon into the chilled custard.
- In a chilled bowl, whip the remaining heavy cream until stiff peaks form, then gently fold it into the custard.
- Sprinkle with additional nutmeg and serve, or refrigerate until serving time.
