Ingredients

  • 1 egg yolk
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/3 cup whole milk
  • 1/3 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • A pinch of freshly grated nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon bourbon
  • Additional freshly grated nutmeg for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the egg yolk and sugar until thick and lemon-colored.
  2. In a saucepan, combine the milk and 1/2 of the heavy cream. Heat the mixture over medium heat until it just coats a metal spoon, stirring constantly.
  3. Remove from heat, and stir in the vanilla and nutmeg. Cool the custard in a cold water bath, stirring occasionally.
  4. Refrigerate the custard for at least 2 hours but no longer than 24 hours.
  5. Just before serving, stir the bourbon into the chilled custard.
  6. In a chilled bowl, whip the remaining heavy cream until stiff peaks form, then gently fold it into the custard.
  7. Sprinkle with additional nutmeg and serve, or refrigerate until serving time.
