Ingredients
- 1/2 cup whole milk
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1.50 large egg yolks
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1/4 cup heavy cream
- Whipped cream
- Ground cinnamon
- Cinnamon stick or Star Anise
- Alcohol (optional)
Instructions
- Separate the egg yolks from the whites, then set aside.
- In a small saucepan, mix the milk, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla, bringing it to a simmer.
- In a medium mixing bowl, combine the egg yolks and sugar, whisking until they become pale in color.
- Slowly add a small amount of the heated milk mixture to the eggs, whisking constantly to temper the eggs. Continue until all the milk is incorporated.
- Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over medium heat until slightly thickened and it coats the back of a spoon. Avoid boiling.
- Remove from heat and stir in the heavy cream.
- Chill the eggnog before serving.
- To serve, top with whipped cream, a sprinkle of ground cinnamon, and a cinnamon stick or star anise if desired. If adding alcohol, stir in 1 jigger or ounce, then mix well.
