Ingredients
- 1 large egg (divided)
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 2/3 cup chilled milk
- 1/4 cup chilled heavy cream
- 1/8 cup bourbon (optional, or 1/8 cup additional heavy cream for nonalcoholic)
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
- Fresh or ground nutmeg for serving
Instructions
- Separate the egg and place the yolk in a medium-sized bowl. Whisk in 1 tablespoon of sugar until the mixture becomes light, fluffy, and buttery yellow.
- In a medium-sized pot over medium heat, warm the milk and heavy cream until it's just about to boil. Then, remove from heat.
- Gradually add a tablespoon of warm milk into the egg mixture, stirring quickly to temper the eggs. Repeat this process twice until the eggs reach the temperature of the milk. Then, whisk the egg mixture into the pot of milk to combine.
- Stir in the bourbon (if using), vanilla, and salt, and then serve.
- In a separate bowl, add the remaining egg white and 1/2 tablespoon of sugar, then beat until stiff peaks form.
- Pour the eggnog into a glass, spoon the meringue on top, and sprinkle with nutmeg before serving.
