Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 teaspoons sugar
  • 1 1/2 oz fresh or frozen cranberries
  • 1/2 lemon, cut into wedges
  • 1/4 orange, sliced into thin rounds
  • 2 1/4 oz London dry gin
  • 3/4 oz plus 3/4 teaspoon off-dry Sherry
  • 1 mint sprig
  • Crushed ice

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, bring sugar and 3/4 cup water to a boil, stirring until sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat and pour off all but 1 cup of simple syrup, refrigerating the remaining syrup for later use.
  2. Heat the syrup in the pan almost to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium. Add the cranberries and simmer until they just begin to burst, about 2-3 minutes. Let the mixture cool in the syrup.
  3. In a large pitcher, combine 2 Tbsp. drained cranberries and 6 Tbsp. cranberry syrup. Add the lemon wedges and orange slices, then vigorously mash the fruit using a muddler or wooden spoon. Stir in the gin and Sherry, and let the mixture steep for 5 minutes.
  4. Strain the mixture into a medium pitcher. Fill a glass with crushed ice and pour half of the mixture into a cocktail shaker. Fill the shaker with ice and shake vigorously for 10 seconds. Strain into the prepared glass, then garnish with a mint sprig and 3 cranberries. Repeat to make more cocktails.
