Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 4 allspice berries
  • 4 black peppercorns
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 star anise
  • 1 piece orange peel
  • 2 ounces rye whiskey
  • 3/4 ounce lemon juice
  • 3/4 ounce Spiced Simple Syrup (above)
  • Club soda, to top
  • Orange wheel, to garnish

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan, combine sugar, water, allspice berries, black peppercorns, cinnamon stick, star anise, and orange peel.
  2. Bring the ingredients to a simmer over low heat, stirring until the sugar is dissolved.
  3. Let the mixture simmer and stir for 10 minutes to develop the flavors.
  4. Allow the spiced simple syrup to cool, then strain it into an airtight container and refrigerate.
  5. For the cocktail, combine rye whiskey, lemon juice, and spiced simple syrup in a cocktail shaker.
  6. Add ice to the shaker, shake well, and strain the mixture into an ice-filled rocks glass.
  7. Top with club soda and garnish with an orange wheel.
