Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup boiling water
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 2 tbsp anise seeds
  • 2 lemon slices (1/4 inch thick)
  • 3-4 large basil leaves
  • 3/4 oz anise honey simple syrup
  • 2 oz bourbon whiskey
  • 2 dashes orange bitters

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan, bring water to a boil and add anise seeds. Let it steep for 15 minutes, then strain out the seeds and discard them.
  2. Add honey to the anise water and stir until dissolved. Store the syrup in the refrigerator for up to 1 month.
  3. In a shaker, muddle lemon slices and basil to release their juices and oils.
  4. Add anise honey simple syrup, whiskey, and bitters to the shaker.
  5. Add a handful of ice cubes to the shaker and shake until chilled.
  6. Fill a rocks glass with crushed ice and strain the mixture over top.
  7. Garnish with a basil leaf and a lemon slice.
